The M&M Club
On April 18th, the Rancho Resort Metals & Mining Club (aka the M & M Club, aka Rockhounders) will be traveling to the Henry G “Hank” Grundstedt San Xavier Underground Mining Laboratory in the historic Pima Mining District. Founded in 1880 by the San Xavier Mining and Smelting Co., the mine was operated continuously until 1918. In 1958 the mine workings surrounding the No. 6 Shaft were leased to the University of Arizona for educational purposes. In 1975, The Anamax Mining Co. donated the No. 6 Shaft to the University of Arizona. Today, the San Xavier Underground Mining Laboratory is a unique teaching and research facility. It is also used as a training resource by Federal and State agencies as well as organizations devoted to underground research, tunnel safety and mine research. The M & M Club was welcomed by staff after we informed them that we welcome being educated on the importance of the mineral industry in Arizona. There will be a sign up sheet in the lobby for members to sign up as drivers or passengers. We’ll leave from the lobby at 8:30 a.m. on April 18th. The tour starts at 9 a.m. and last approximately an hour. Afterwards, members interested will travel to Triple Play on Duval Mine Road for a hearty early lunch. If you’re not a member but are interested in joining the M & M Club and participating in the April 18th adventure, contact Tom Monroe at 520-207-0140 or tommonroe59@gmail.com.
